ECTI Searchable Commerce Control List
UPDATED: November 1, 2021
If you produce or distribute hardware, software or technology and you intend to export it, you must confirm whether you need an export license from the U.S. Department of Commerce.
That said, classifying an item is the first major step in export compliance; until this task is complete, it’s impossible to know if a license is required. That’s where the Commerce Control List (CCL) comes into play.
The CCL is a list of items subject to export restrictions and divided into several categories around broad types of technology. Each category is then further divided into individual entries known as export control classification numbers, or ECCNs.
All items under Department of Commerce control require a specific ECCN. If the item you intend to export falls into an ECCN, you must obtain a license before exporting it to a few countries, many countries or all countries—depending on the specific ECCN.
Complying with export restrictions can be complex and time-consuming. To help you with the critical step of item classification, the Export Compliance Training Institute (ECTI) is pleased to offer a searchable Commerce Control List for free download.
